Walkers Hoops and Crosses Review

Food to review, yep sign me up to that one. Trust me in this house we love our food especially me and Aly and when a little gift box turned up we couldn’t wait to see what was inside.

Hoops

Granted when you buy these in a shop it won’t come in a presentation box but I do like a company that go the extra mile when sending out review items unlike some which just send it in a Jiffy bag.

Box

This cheeky little fella is tucked up in bed with Mia who actually loves monkeys, it’s as if Walkers knew.

Anyway back to the actual crisps with are called Hoops and Crosses and as you would expect they are shaped like Hoops and Crosses. The pack  we got sent was Roast Beef and came in a bright yellow packet which really stands out. As for the flavour they were delicious and both me and Aly were a little disappointed when we noticed the packet was empty but she has asked for them in the lunch box.

Walkers do Hoops and Crosses in 3 different flavours, Roast Beef, Prawn Cocktail and Salt and Vinegar which I can’t actually wait to try. All 3 of these flavours are also suitable for vegetarians which has pleased the wife even if she didn’t get a chance to try them.

Hoops2

The crisps kind of reminded me a bit of Monster Munch which used to be a favourite of mine, they were quite light and the flavour wasn’t too strong which can be the case with some meaty flavour crisps.

Hoops and Crosses are made from Wholegrain and have no artificial colours or preservatives, they also have only 85 calories per bag.

Fajitas They Make Me Happy

This past week we were sent this amazing package from Discovery

IMG_20130427_091048

Well luckily enough one of our favourite meals is Fajitas so this was a winner with us. Below is the recipe we use for our meal.

Ingredients

  • 300g Quorn Chicken Style Pieces
  • Sliced Red and Yellow Pepper
  • Sliced Onion
  • 1 Discovery Fajita Kit
  • Discovery Soured Cream
  • Grated Cheese

Fajitas1

What To Do

  • Fry the Quorn pieces in a deep frying pan or wok over a medium heat in a little oil.
  • When the Quorn is slightly browned add in the onion and peppers and fry for roughly 10mins
  • The add the fajitas seasoning and mix together and fry until the onions and peppers are cooked.
  • Quickly heat the wraps up in microwave for 50seconds then serve.

Fajitas2

Normally I don’t have Soured Cream on mine but as they had sent some of their new Garlic & Herb Soured Cream and oh my gosh what a difference it makes, it adds a cool herby sensation to the spices of the fajitas. We will also be using this with a chilli next week.

We were sent these items for the purpose of this review and recipe but all thoughts are our own

Butlins – Part 3 The Entertainment

As some of you may have seen in the Easter holidays our little family headed off to Butlins in Bognor Regis for a break as part of our role as Butlins Ambassador.

The review will be split down in to three separate parts, firstly accommodation, secondly food and last of all entertainment.

So here is the final part from our break at Butlins and hopefully you’ve found it really useful, this part is about the entertainment and general activities on offer at Butlins.

Angelina

When you check into your accommodation you will be given a ‘What’s On’ guide and you will see that on everyday you have so much choice it’s near impossible to fit it all in. This is where a bit of planning comes into play so you don’t miss a show. Somehow we managed to miss a couple of shows but we pretty much got to see the one’s they wanted.

A lot of the shows are performed on the SkyLine Stage which is in the middle of the SkyLine Pavilion. My tip for this is if you want a good viewing position get there early as it fills up every quickly. In front of the stage is an open floor space for the children to get up close with the acts and also sing, dance and jump about with the show and the Redcoats.

Thomas Show

Each of the shows really do interact very well it the children and not once did they get bored and would often be singing along or dancing with them. The shows with Mike The Knight and Thomas went down very well especially the Thomas show as they got to make a party lantern which focused their minds on something.

MTK

The other main stage at Butlins is called Centre Stage and that’s where you’ll see the evening music and other music and dance shows. At the Centre Stage we saw two completely different shows, the first was Elmo makes Music with all the other stars from Sesame Street which the girls loved…again get their early as it fills up quickly.

Street

The second show was erm how do I say this…Rylan from XFactor.

365 15 3

Aside from the shows you also have the amazing Fairground and Aly enjoyed the Helter Skelter and both the girls enjoyed the Merry Go Round but a few of the other rides they were just a little bit small for but they will enjoy those next time I’m sure. If you do have smaller children they have a few smaller rides in the SkyLine Pavilion which Aly spent ages on.

Dotted around the resort you will also find a few outdoor play areas such as the one by the Shoreline hotel and one outside of The Beachcomber Inn both of which the girls spend ages in, back inside of the Pavilion you also have two soft play areas, one for children over 1m15cm (I think) and one for the smaller children and it is pretty big and the girls would easily fill and hour just playing in that.

If you have younger children take them to Billy’s Buddies which is a little area designed for small children where there is a little soft area and music playing, they also do various messy play things in there too and again it’s totally free.

One of the big draws is Splash Waterworld which as the name suggests is a swimming theme park. Like most pools it gets busy, very busy but it’s worth it. The pools have so much going on from various slides to two swimming areas plus the added bonus of a water cannon and waves which Aly and Mia loved even if it did throw them about a bit. My tip for the swimming is wear your costume underneath so you can just take your day clothes off as the changing rooms and packed.

Without any shadow of a doubt you will enjoy your time at Butlins and you will find plenty to do and if you’re children are anything like mine they will be sound asleep by 7.30.

I’m hoping I’ve covered everything and all the entertainment and activities I have mentioned are totally FREE and are included in your stay. If however you have run out of things to do you are a stones throw away from Bognor beach and unfortunately due to the weather we didn’t get a chance to walk along it but it’s something we will do next time.

Butlins – Part 2 Food Review

As some of you may have seen in the Easter holidays our little family headed off to Butlins in Bognor Regis for a break as part of our role as Butlins Ambassador.

The review will be split down in to three separate parts, firstly accommodation, secondly food and last of all entertainment.

Now this is the second part which means it’s time for my favourite subject…food!!

When we stayed at Butlins we went for the Bed, Breakfast & Dinner option. This basically means in the morning you get your breakfast in the hotel in the morning and dinner of an evening at your hotel or one of the many restaurants on site.

Breakfasts are served from 7am till 10.30am and it’s a buffet system which for us is perfect. I love my full cooked breakfasts and the girls well they eat just about everything in sight. We would get down to breakfast at around 8am and in the 4 days we were there we never had to wait for a table (this may be different if you head down at 9am). The food was always well presented and the cooked food was never cold or empty. You really could have whatever you wanted, from fruit to cereals, pastry to cooked. The teas and toast was brought to your table by the always friendly staff.

We always ate well at breakfast so all we ever needed at lunch was a sandwich. Most of the time we’d get this from the Skyline Cafe which is right in the centre of the Skyline Pavilion which as you can imagine gets quite busy. We’d get two children’s lunch boxes, two sandwiches and a couple of snacks and it would come to about £20 which on past experience is about right for lunch.  One day we had lunch at The Beachcomber Inn which to me is decorated perfectly. Honestly I just fell in love with this place, it’s light and looks classy. I will warn you they don’t serve lunch till  12pm which means it is then a mad rush to the bar to place your order but when it arrives it tastes so good. This again for sandwiches for us all and drinks came to about £20.

The Beachcomber Inn

The Beachcomber Inn

My biggest tip with regards to dinner is book, book, BOOK! Everyone needs to eat dinner so you can imagine it gets booked very quickly, no matter what restaurant. Now of you book the Breakfast and dinner option you can either eat at your hotel or eat at another restaurant and the hotel will give you a voucher to get so much off your meals. You can also book other restaurants from the hotel reception desk.

During our stay we had dinner twice at The Shoreline, once at Papa John’s and also at Turner’s. Much like breakfast the dinner at the South Coast Restaurant in the Shoreline it’s buffet which is good for me as I can eat till the cows come in…much like the steak topped with fish n chips I had on day one. They had a brilliant choice and catered for all diet types and had a separate area for the children. They had a whole host of things to chose from including starters and about 10 different puddings. The girls who are quite picky also found plenty to eat and they had a good selection of vegetables so it wasn’t all junk food. We went back to the restaurant a few days later for dinner again and the selection was totally different so you could easily eat here all week without eating the same stuff over and over again.

For our second day we went to Papa John’s (which you can’t book) which is ideal for our family as Laura & Mia love pasta and me and Aly love pizza so what could be better than a Italian? Papa John’s do menu food or a pizza buffet including pasta and salad which of course we went for. They really did every type of pizza from plain to meaty and some vegetarian options. Oh and the pudding was amazing. With our dinner voucher we actually only had to pay for the drinks which when you have three fruit juices and a tap water it really doesn’t cost a lot.

Papa John's Chocolate Cheesecake

Papa John’s Chocolate Cheesecake

Our final dinner destination was Turner’s, Brian Turner’s own restaurant and as you would expect from a Michelin-starred chef it’s decorated to perfection and the menu all sounds delicious. I went for the Turner’s Own Burger Steak with the Best Chips and Laura had Baked Salmon Fillet in Cream, White Wine & Local Cockles. Both the mains were good portion sizes which you don’t always get at celebrity chef restaurants and as you’d expect very well presented. Again with out dinner voucher we ended up paying around £15 which for the mains, puddings and drinks I think it’s very good value.

Sorry it’s a long post but I wanted to try and describe how good I felt the food was at Butlins and not like some people’s views of how it was 10 years ago.

Butlins Shoreline Hotel #Review

As some of you may have seen last week our little family headed off to Butlins in Bognor Regis for a break as part of our role as Butlins Ambassador.

The review will be split down in to three separate parts, firstly accommodation, secondly food and last of all entertainment.

For our trip we’d decided on staying in the impressive looking Nelson’s Stateroom which on the website looked amazing and we just hoped it lived up to our expectations.

46-101982_Nelsons-Room

On the day of arrival we’d got to Butlins a little bit early so headed off to have a look around but by 1pm we was informed that our room was ready and we could check in.

Our floor was on the 4th floor, which in this hotel is also the top floor but there was two lifts so getting up there was not a problem with the children and luggage.

When we got into the room the first thing that hits you is the massive floor to ceiling wall of windows and how light the room is. The children’s room was bright and colourful with bunk beds in the room and a huge bathroom.

During our stay the hotel room really had everything we’d ever need for a week away, plenty of towels, a hair-dryer, iron and ironing board and a safe. There was even a couple of TVs and DVD players to keep the children entertained for those quiet times. (If you have a quiet moment) The huge king size bed was very comfortable and the girls seemed to enjoy sleeping in the bunk beds and there was extra pillows in the wardrobes if you required them. In the room you also  had plenty of storage space to hide away all your clothes as well as the suitcases. In the room you also had a perfectly sized mini fridge which is ideal for storing milk, you’d easily get 4-5 bottles of water and some milk in there without any trouble.

One of the brilliant little touches that they add is once housekeeping have been is the epic and clever towel animals.

Animal Shapes

Every afternoon when we’d return we’d find a new towel animal greeting us and these little touches really made the difference.

Every morning we had breakfast in the hotel restaurant which always had lots of chose from whether you wanted a cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit or just some pastry they had it all. Every morning we was down for breakfast at about 8am and we never had to wait for a table. I will expand on this in the food section of my reviews.

The front of the hotel was always well presented and the front of house staff always willing to help.

A few tips to help with your stay. When you first check in is to book your evening meal straight away as by the time we got there on the Monday the only available times left were 4.45pm or 7.15pm. The second tip is you can book other restaurants from the hotel reception which makes things a lot easier.

You do get a few added benefits of staying at the hotel such as Arts & Crafts with Billy Bear and Storytime with Billy. The real winner is the putting Billy Bear to bed and reading him a night time story which the children love doing the one problem with it is the time in which it’s done. It starts at 8.30pm and Aly didn’t get back to our hotel room till 9.15pm which I think for a 5 year old is much too late and think moving it forward an hour won’t do any harm at all. But that is a very small thing and isn’t a problem if you do it just a few times a week.

Storytime Billy copy

All in all this was one of the best hotels we’ve stayed in and would not have any problem in recommending this hotel to anyone.

Playmobil Pirate Carry Case

Playmobil Carry Case

Over the past few years Aly has collected a few little bits of Playmobil and collected the little figures so for Christmas we had a look round for a small piece for her collection.

This seemed perfect as she totally loves Pirates and it came in a neat and tidy carry case so she could keep it all together. This pirate set comes with two characters and canon that fires, a rowing boat and some treasure with treasure chest. I must warn you that the treasure coins are very small so if you have young children just be careful.

As you’d expect from a Playmobil product it’s very well made and very robust. This Pirate Carry case is part of a carry case series which includes a Police, Fire, Princess and Knight carry cases.

The Playmobil Carry Case has an R.R.P of £9.99

Each flavour box is packed with a selection of independently produced artisan food products from all around the UK. Every month you’ll get a packed box from small shop owners and market traders giving allowing them to get their products out there and into peoples hands and stomachs.

Flavourly also work closely with FareShare food bank charity meaning they donate ONE meal to them for EVERY Flavourly Box purchased.

Now importantly how was the food?

In my box I received

  • Farmhouse Nettle Cheese
  • Bacon Jam
  • Oatcakes
  • Rooibus and Vanilla Tea
  • Air Cured Beef Biltong
  • Whisky Tablet Slab

Flavour Box

I think I can safely say I would never normally go into a shop and select these items and that’s what we loved about this box. It made us try new and different things and some we loved and others not so much. I never expected to like everything but it takes you out of your comfort zone and you find some amazing food such as the Bacon Jam. This is such a strange idea yet it works perfectly on toast and I didn’t even know they made Bacon jam but thanks to this box I now know and I’ll be getting some more.

A Flavourly monthly food subscription is £22 per month but as a very special offer Flavourly have given me a code to pass on the the readers so you get £10 OFF your first box just use code ‘FLAVOURLY10′

Best of TV and Movies Board Game Review

best of tv and movie

At Christmas we always like to try out a new board game when we have friends round and this year we gave The Best of TV and Movies from Drumond Park. We’ve previously played The Logo Game and this is from the same range so we kind of knew what to expect.

The idea of the game is you take it in turns to ask a series of questions from a card which has a theme on the front. The theme can be a series of photos, a movie, a colour or just pot luck. Each card has 4 different colours on it, if you get that question right you move to that colour on the board. This time they have also added bonus cards like Mute and Bonus cards.

The questions are very up to date with questions about Harry Potter, James Bond, all the soaps, X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing and much much more. You get 400 cards and if need be you can get a booster pack, you can also play as teams on individually. We played as 5 individually and the game probably took about an hour to complete which is about right for a board game.

Best of TV and Movies board game has an R.R.P of £29.99

Galt Sparkle Jewellery Review

galt

Aly got given this as a present for Christmas and was excited as she has often watched me making jewellery and wanted to join in.

You get 3 different styles of beads and 2 different stringing materials which was a decent amount to do a number of bracelets and necklaces. Aly made 2 bracelets and a necklace and we still have enough to play with it again on another occasion.

I thought Aly might find it hard to thread the beads on to the strings but managed well. Even Mia managed to thread some beads on with supervision.

On the whole I thought this was a very good set, good value for money (£4.99) and good age suitability.

Galt Sparkle Jewellery is available from the Amazon for £4.99
